Bamurru Plains Resort, Northern Territory
A working buffalo station is not the most expected setting for a luxury bush camp, but it does give a rarely seen window into one of Australia's most northern and remote locations. Just 2.5 hours drive north of Kakadu National Park  and 3 hours drive east of Darwin (or 20 minutes from each by plane), Bamurru is set on the edge of the Mary River floodplains and is teeming with wildlife. There are 236 species of birdlife that an airboat can get you up close to. Add platforms and the airboat becomes one of the best ways to catch one of the world's greatest sporting fish - barramundi. The afternoon makes these wetlands accessible by four-wheel drive; crocodiles, dingos and wallaroos are just a few of the other wildlife members that can be spotted. The exclusivity of nine permanent-tents-only matched with clean-lined bush chic gives this resort its own take on luxury. A lantern-lit pool deck will probably become one of your favourite places to lounge at the end of the day.

It feels a million-miles away from the tourist trap, yet Bamurru is still close enough to helicopter or drive down into Kakadu and Arnhem Land to see Aboriginal rock art for the day.
